Top 5 Things to Consider When Relocating Out of State

Each year, many people relocate from one state to another. There are many reasons for this, including job opportunities, military transfers, retirement, family obligations, a warmer climate, or simply the desire to live in and experience a new place. Whatever the reason, you’re going to want to do your research and be prepared before making the move. Of course, you are going to want to ensure the schools are good, crime rates are low and quality healthcare is available. Beyond those basic but critical items, we have identified five important things for you to consider before relocating to another state.

  1. The housing market. How healthy is it in the town you’re targeting? Are you buying at a good time and can you expect growth? Will you get more house for the money, or will you have to spend more to get a comparable house to the one you’re in? What are the current trends? Sites like Zillow.com and Realtor.com are a great way to gather information and gauge the price of housing in a particular market. But, you are going to want to work with a licensed Realtor® in the local market for the most accurate and neighborhood-specific information.
  2. The local economy. Hopefully, it’s the same or better than the place you’re moving from. How is the job market, and is it in an upward trend? Are there multiple large companies in the area that are doing well? What is the cost of living? You’ll need to do your homework to determine how much more or less you will be spending on things like utilities, groceries, gas, clothes, shopping and entertainment, etc. You can avoid surprises by learning the nuances in advance and properly preparing for them.
  3. Climate. As I’m sure you’re aware, many people seek warmer climates when they move. Not surprisingly, Florida is the number one destination for relocations. Wherever you’re moving, find out what the temperatures will be on average, and also what you can expect for the extremes. How hot is it going to be in July and August, and how bad is the humidity? If you’re moving to a colder climate, you’ll obviously want to know those extremes as well, and you will likely need to adjust your wardrobe. You may also consider a vehicle with AWD if snow and ice are common. Are there any new elements to be aware of, such as a rainy season or potential draught? Knowing and preparing for these things will increase your enjoyment once you’re there.
  4. Getting around town. Whether for work or pleasure, or general necessity, you’re going to need to navigate around your new town, and you’ll want to be able to do so efficiently if/when necessary. Find out if it is walkable and if there is mass transit available – and how safe and effective it is for your needs. Or, is everything spread out so you may have to drive a bit to get to where you’re going. What are the main roads, and are there any construction projects on the horizon? Once you arrive at your frequent destinations, what is the parking situation, and will you have to pay to park? These are all factors you’ll want to consider as they will affect you (and likely your mood) daily.
  5. Available amenities. When you are not working or tending to other obligations, what options are available for your enjoyment? Are there parks, beaches or open spaces nearby? What about dining and restaurant options? You might want to know where you can score the best pizza or sushi in town. What does the dessert scene look like? If shopping is your bag, you’ll need to know where you can score the best deals. What gyms and workout facilities are available? If you have a dog, you’ll want to know if there is a dog park nearby, or maybe even walking and hiking trails. Where are the golf courses located and what are the greens fees? Wherever your interests lie, being knowledgeable will increase your enjoyment and help you better assimilate into your new town.
